"A writer is someone who happens to discover something that already exists in the world but that no one has noticed, and then puts that into words." - Yoko Ogawa

A nugget of wisdom for all who create. Being a filmmaker, I try to view the world objectively, with observation instead of interpretation, and uncover the strange, uncomfortable truths lurking in the shadows.
HAYDEN GEHR: American Filmmaker Based in Hong Kong
Hayden Gehr is an aspiring director from the US with an MFA in Film, Television and Digital Media from Hong Kong Baptist University. In the last three years, he has directed and edited five narrative short films and one documentary, while also reaching fluency in Mandarin after working on dozens of Chinese-speaking film sets. This linguistic and cultural exchange in service of creating impactful art is what energizes and inspires him to continue this journey.

Hayden is an avid watcher of East Asian Cinema with a particular love for the films of South Korean auteur Lee Chang-Dong and Taiwanese master Edward Yang. His own short films are meditative, probing, and naturalistic, and often weave in undercurrents of mystery and surrealism. They aim to portray complex characters across a diverse range of identities, while addressing themes such as the unknowability of others, the impermanence of time, the ever-evolving meaning of home, and the messiness of human relationships.

As a recent graduate, Hayden hopes to refine his storytelling skills by working as a video editor while writing his own feature-length scripts. He dreams of one day directing socially conscious, emotionally resonant independent films that shed light on voices that are often silenced in mainstream culture.
